Hi

Does anyone suffer from pins and needles in their hands. My wrist has been so painful today and I also have pins and
needles running from my wrist to tip of my little finger - I cant seem to get rid of it. Just wondered if this is the norm. Fells like somone has
jumped up and down on my hand!

Hi Rosie It sounds like you have Carpel Tunnel . I had it ,it is very painful and the pins and needles are awful. The operation helped me .
The swelling in my wrists with thr R A caused it .You need to go to your doctor . I hope you get it sorted sooner than i did.

Hello Rosie

Yes I have had pins and needles in my hands and fingers can last a day or
so and then disappear for days. I have not seen any one about this though.
It is very annoying and painful isn't

I've got another appointment with OT this Tuesday so might mention it at the hospital. Had really bad cold this week, stayed home from work for
2 days and for some reason my hands got worse. Wondered if a virus finds your weakspot and thats the reason why??

I've been using wrist splints at work but find using a mouse is hampered when I wear them. Was wondering if lycra gloves
would work. Anyone use them?

I still find it hard to belive I have RA - nurse says I am in denial. Hard to get my head around it. Does anyone get bad headache after taking Methotrexate?

Sorry for all the questions - still new to this malarky. Havent even used my Blue Badge yet!

Thanks for replies

Are you on Methotrexate alone, Rosie, or do you have anti tnf drugs as well? if so, you would be as well to mention the pins and needles to your GP or rheummy.

Take care

Hi Rosie,

When I had pins and needles from my wrist to the tip of my little finger it turned out to be caused by leaning on my elbow when I sit at the computer. I stopped doing that and the pins and needles went away.

Dear Rosie,
You seem to be describing the symptoms of Carpel Tunnel syndrome.
As an ex sufferer myself it all sounds familiar to me.
A nerve conduction test should be performed, to confirm it and a fairly simple
operation to release the tunnel in each wrist should sort it out for you.
It is done under local anaesthetic and should ideally be performed by a
specialist hand surgeon.
The operations are usually performed seperately, mine were several months apart.
But the improvement they made to my quality of life cannot be overstated!
Get the diagnosis confirmed so you can be treated!
by the way, the operation can be repeated if the symptoms ever trouble you
again, which hopefully they would not.
Best wishes,
FionaSmile

Fiona is spot on.

I have Carpal Tunnel in both hands but my right isn't bad. I have had the left one done twice. The result the first time was astounding, the second time I still had problems and that's what led to the RA diagnosis.

My wrists (and feet) take the brunt of the pain of RA. I use wrist splints but also have some software called RSI Guard on my computer which means I don't have to click, it clicks for me so I just move the mouse around or press a button to double click on an e-mail I want to open. Try to get a split keyboard as well, an amazing difference. Much more relaxed on the wrists.

Lycra gloves have never helped me to be honest, only for keeping my hands warm when driving. But you never know, if you can afford them, give them a try.

Maybe get resting splints to wear in bed. I've found them really helpful when my wrists are giving me what for.

Good luck for whatever you decide.

Angie

Hi

My OT checked for carpal tunnel without nerve conduction studies- if it effects one bit it is carpal and if it is another bit, it isnt. The good bit about the carpal tunnel it is treatable.

As for the nurse saying you are in denial- i think that getting through that is a life long task and although I can say having RA has become part of who I am now, it has taken yrs of process to get there.

I feel a bit annoyed that they dismissed your "getting your head round things" so flippantly.

Basically, you cannot IMO get your head round the whole thing. You can just do the next bit that you are having to deal with. I do think that education and knowledge is power and I certainly want as much power as I can in this debilitating nasty disease.

There are health psychologists that specialise in this sort of thing and will help you through the process of understanding, grieving the losses, moving forward with life and then repeating the cycle at different levels in different ways.

Take great care,

I had pins and needles in my hands and fingers some time ago. Sometimes they even went numb. I mentioned it to my specialist nurse and she did say it could be carpal tunnel or RA. She did mention about having test done to see if it was carpel tunnel but we decided to increase my meds to see if it helped. It did, so it must of been the RA.

I can totally relate to you finding it hard to believe that you have RA, most of the time I feel the same. I am so tempted sometimes to stop taking the medication just to see what would happen just in case they have made some terrible mistake. But when I am feeling how I am at the moment I realise that they haven't and yes I have got something wrong with me. I just think it is just wishful thinking that I haven't got this terrible thing called RA when I read up all about it on the internet. I did or I thought I did, look after my body so well and it is now turning on me and causing so many problems.

I don't know if I will ever 'accept' it, family and friends have no idea how I feel, I always try my hardest to hide things from them. If anyone asks how I am I always smile and say I'm alright thanks!!!!

This is the only place where I can really be honest about how I feel. The rest of the time I try to be possitive and laugh about it. I joke about falling apart and which bit hurts now. But really I still feel I don't really believe it, that it is something that happens to other people, not me,that it won't get any worse. I do sort of acknowledge that I am deceiving myself but I suppose it is one way of coping with something I'm stuck with.

yes i suffered with Carpel Tunnel in my right had and had the procedure done last November.

unfortunately it wasn't a great success for me ... but in most cases it is.

i didn't suffer from it in the wrist though, it was my index middle and ring fingers where i had numbness and pins and needles.

i would definately get an opinion on it as it is something that can be sorted.
